In India, a daughter’s wedding is not just a personal event — it’s a cultural celebration. But let’s be honest: weddings can be expensive. For families from economically weaker backgrounds, the pressure of arranging a marriage — especially with limited resources — can be overwhelming.
Understanding this, the Himachal Pradesh government came up with a thoughtful initiative: the Shagun Yojna. It’s a simple but powerful idea — to support underprivileged families financially when their daughters get married. Let’s explore what this scheme is all about, and why it matters.
What is Shagun Yojna?
Shagun Yojna is a financial assistance scheme launched by the Himachal Pradesh government to support the marriage of daughters from poor and economically weaker families. Under this scheme, the government provides a one-time grant of ₹31,000 to eligible families when their daughter gets married.
This amount might not cover an entire wedding, but it does help ease the burden — whether it goes toward the basic ceremony, buying clothes, or simply helping the bride start her new life.
Who Can Benefit?
The scheme is meant for families who genuinely need support. Here’s who is eligible:
- Families that fall under BPL (Below Poverty Line) category.
There are a few other conditions too. The girl must be 18 years or older, and the groom must be at least 21 years old. Also, the family should be permanent residents of Himachal Pradesh.
Why Was This Scheme Launched?
Weddings are often considered a matter of pride, especially in rural areas. But for many families, arranging funds for even a simple wedding becomes stressful. In such situations, families often borrow money or fall into debt — and sadly, this sometimes pushes them toward dowry or other harmful practices.
The Shagun Yojna helps break that cycle. By giving timely financial assistance, the government is sending a message: you’re not alone.
More than the money, the scheme gives dignity and support to families — and to the daughters who often bear the emotional burden of their family’s financial struggles.

Over the years, Shagun Yojna has helped thousands of families across Himachal Pradesh. It’s not just about the money — it’s about reducing stress, preventing families from taking loans, and giving girls a better start in their married life.
For many, it also helps ensure that marriages happen legally and safely, with proper age and consent — reducing chances of child marriage or forced unions.
In Conclusion
